It's important to us to find opportunities to create an alternative angle or perspective of whatever is happing in front of us. Sometimes that looks like a tight photograph followed by a wide shot to show the whole scene. Other times the scene is evenly lit, then dramatically lit with supplemental lighting. Once our couples have entered the reception and are enjoying their time in the party, we don't intend to disrupt that. Instead, we find non-invasive photographs to make right there in the room. Here's an example from a wedding at Batello in Jersey City. After spending time downstairs on the main floor with the couple and their guests, I decided to climb the industrial stairs in the back of the room to make a creative wedding photo. As I looked over the guest filling the room, I really enjoyed seeing the glow the candle's on the couple's faces. I wanted to feature them in a way that made them stand out. With some strategic lighting, I was able to retain the ambiance and still make keep the couple as the focus of the room.
